The onsite clinic operated and staffed by WorkCare at UTC Aerospace Systems in Chula Vista, Calif., is the recipient of an internal UTC Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Award in the category of Health and Safety Management.
The annual EH&S awards are presented to business units or locations demonstrating significant improvement or long-term sustained excellence in one of nine program areas. UTC Aerospace Systems designs, manufactures and services integrated systems and components for the aerospace and defense industries on a global scale.
At the Chula Vista plant, clinical services are provided by occupational health nurses Rey Llagas, R.N., and Karen Aragones, R.N., M.B.A., (pictured above) under the remote supervision of Patrick O’Callahan, M.D., M.P.H., an associate medical director with WorkCare assigned to the company as a consulting physician. The team has extensive medical surveillance and injury prevention and management experience.
“Your medical clinic is an exciting project that had material impact to the health and safety of your employees,” UTC Aerospace Systems EH&S Vice President Lisa Szewczul said in a letter to senior executives at the site.
Shawn Ivey, EH&S manager at Chula Vista, said the clinic is a key contributor to measurable improvements including an 84 percent decrease in recordable injuries and an 89 percent drop in lost-time injuries between 2012 and 2014 – the equivalent of having three employees at work full time rather than sidelined over a two-year period.
“A lot of employees are eager to come in and talk with Rey and Karen about preventive measures they can take,” Ivey said. “Having two full-time nurses onsite has freed up more time for case management and follow up.”
“We are proud of our onsite team and appreciate the opportunity to support the company’s commitment to protecting the health and safety of its employees,” said Peter P. Greaney, M.D., president and medical director of WorkCare.
The summer edition of WorkCare’s quarterly newsletter, Vitality Atlas, will feature an article on the onsite clinic model and related outcomes at the Chula Vista facility. Watch for it in early July.
